Brooklyn Heights Residence 1

This project came to me through a local real estate broker. Two adjacent apartments were purchased with the intention of combining them. Halfway through demolition, structural cracks appeared in other units and accusations flew. The project was stopped. A consulting engineer was engaged. Repairs were made. The owner was ordered to restore the two discreet units. I was hired. Without plans showing the historical conditions, the plan had to be reinvented. Custom historic moldings were deployed around the perimeter. A white oak herringbone “carpet” ties multiple rooms together to create a light-filled great room. Kitchens and baths were treated with a simple white-on-white palette, also historic in origin, though now applied in a stripped-down modernist fashion meant to appeal to potential buyers. Both units were sold at a profit. A few years later, the client called me about three units he wanted to join.
